• City Ends Controversial Program: New York City has removed the last of its illegal immigrants from Orange County hotels as of December 6, 2023, marking the end of a costly and controversial program initiated in May 2023.
• Exposure of Wasteful Practices: An audit by the city’s comptroller’s office revealed that the program had cost taxpayers millions of dollars in overpayments to contractors, highlighting the inefficiency and economic burden of housing illegal immigrants.
• Public Support for Change: Mayor Eric Adams and many New Yorkers support scaling back the shelter program, with polls indicating that a majority of voters back efforts to deport illegal immigrants.
• Legal and Moral Obligation: The city’s actions aim to uphold the rule of law and enforce immigration laws, addressing activists’ objections that illegal immigrants should remain in hotels indefinitely.
• Impact and Future Outlook: The closure of the hotels and other facilities is part of a broader strategy to reduce the strain on resources and redirect focus towards supporting lawful residents and addressing other critical community issues.
In a significant move that marks the end of a controversial and costly program, New York City has finally removed the last of its illegal immigrants from Orange County hotels. According to a court filing dated December 9, the city confirmed that as of December 6, no illegal immigrants reside in any hotels in Orange County. This decision is long overdue and represents a critical step in addressing the strain that illegal immigration has placed on our resources and communities.
The move to house illegal immigrants in hotels across the state, including Orange County, was initiated in May 2023, following an unprecedented influx of over 60,000 illegal immigrants into New York City in a single year. This influx placed an overwhelming burden on our public systems, forcing the city to contract with hotels and upstate facilities to provide temporary shelter. At the time, more than 37,500 illegal immigrants were in the city’s care, and the situation only seemed to get worse. However, it’s clear now that this approach was not only costly but also counterproductive. As of May 2023, New York City had already sent 186 illegal immigrants to Orange County hotels, and within days, the county filed a lawsuit seeking to ban the controversial practice. The lawsuit was granted, putting a temporary halt to further placements in Orange County hotels.
The issue is far more complex than simply providing shelter. These individuals entered the United States illegally, bypassing our immigration laws and processes designed to protect our nation’s borders and ensure orderly entry. By housing them in taxpayer-funded hotels, the city was essentially rewarding, which has only served to encourage more illegal crossings and put a strain on resources that should be focused on supporting legal residents and addressing other critical issues.
The city’s own comptroller’s office released a damning audit in August 2024, revealing that the city had overpaid its main contractors and subcontractors by millions of dollars for services related to housing illegal immigrants. This waste of taxpayer money is simply unacceptable and highlights the urgent need for a more rational and law-abiding approach.
Mayor Eric Adams has been at the forefront of efforts to scale back the city’s shelter program, stating, “We have been wasting taxpayers’ money for far too long.” His actions are in line with the will of many New Yorkers who see the obvious financial and social toll that illegal immigration has taken on the city and the state.
According to a recent Siena poll, a majority of New York voters support the Trump administration’s efforts to deport illegal immigrants in the state. This sentiment is not without merit. The influx of illegal immigrants has placed an enormous burden on public services, not to mention the broader economic and social implications.
Activists and some elected officials have protested the closure of migrant shelters, arguing that migrants should be allowed to remain in their hotels indefinitely. However, this argument is misguided and ignores the fact that these individuals are in the United States unlawfully. New York City and the state have a legal and moral obligation to uphold the rule of law, which includes enforcing immigration laws.
By removing illegal immigrants from hotels, New York City is taking a long-overdue step toward rectifying the situation. The closure of the Orange County hotels and other facilities is part of a broader plan to reduce the number of illegal immigrants under the city’s care, which has been on a steady decline over the past five months.
It’s time for illegal immigrants to leave these hotels and for New York City to redirect its resources towards more productive and lawful uses. The city must focus on supporting legal residents and addressing the many pressing issues faced by our communities, rather than propping up an ineffective and costly system designed to house individuals who are in our country illegally.
This is not merely a political issue; it’s a matter of common sense and adherence to the rule of law. As New York State Assembly member Matt Slater aptly put it, “New Yorkers have had it.” It’s time for change, and it’s time for those who are in the United States unlawfully to leave.
The removal of illegal immigrants from Orange County hotels marks a significant step towards restoring order and fiscal responsibility in New York City. As the city continues to scale back its shelter program and work towards a more sustainable immigration policy, it’s clear that enforcement of our nation’s immigration laws is long overdue. New York City and the state must continue to prioritize the rights and needs of lawful residents and work towards a more secure and prosperous future for all.
It’s time for illegal immigrants to leave the hotels, and it’s time for our communities to breathe a sigh of relief as we move towards a more responsible and law-abiding approach to immigration.
